How to get a logo sorted for your trade

Almost every business has a logo and it’s no different for tradies. A good looking and memorable logo can help send a message of trust to your potential customers and it will help your business stand out from the pack.

Tradie Logo

Do I really need a logo?

Yes you do! It will make your business stand out from others that don’t have logo or perhaps have a logo that’s not that great. It also acts as an advertisement that’s working for you 24/7 when you make good use of it on your vehicle, website, business cards, t-shirts, emails etc.

How much does it cost?

You might only need a logo or a full branding package and style guide. For bigger companies you will definitely want professional branding for your business, but for sole traders and smaller businesses you can get away with just a logo and build out your branding further down the road to include different fonts, a colour scheme, different versions of the logo and a style guide. With all of that in mind, a logo can end up costing $1000 or more. We have recently removed our fixed pricing model since COVID-19 and are quoting individual prices based on your needs and budget. We can work with you on getting a logo now and paying later, if that will help you.

What’s the difference between a cheap and expensive logo?

It’s important to understand the differences between a cheap logo you can sort yourself on canva or graphic river and a professional logo designed by a graphic artist.

Some of the cheaper options may look ok but there are some shortcomings when going with a cheaper option which most won’t consider until they discover they need something more professional. An obvious shortcoming of a cheap logo is that it’s going to look very generic and it’s most likely not going to portray your business properly and have the wrong messaging. A cheap logo won’t have different versions for different uses e.g. the logo on your website is going to be a completely different file format and colour range compared to something that needs to go on your t-shirt or vehicle. Only a professional designer will know this and if you find this out too late you may end up paying a lot more because you have to get a cheap logo reworked so it can be used for print and digital.

Tradie Branding

What should I look for in a logo?

The four things we aim for when designing a logo are: simplicity, making it memorable, timeless and clever. These days logos need to be quite simple because they are used across a wide range of mediums and devices from a small icon on your phone to a huge print across your truck. We are also huge fans of incorporating the logo into the name of the business which makes it look more professional and tailored to your business, for example the image at the top of this article is the logo for SS bricklaying where we incorporated the shape of bricks into the name of the business.

I would recommend leaving the design up to the professional though, but the best thing you can do as a client to help the designer create something that you’ll love is to give them as much information as possible. This information can include: how long you’ve been in business for, what your favourite colours are, where you think you’ll be using the logo e.g. your car, website, Facebook profile, clothes, business cards etc. Generally the designer will come back with a few examples which you can give feedback on to help narrow it down.
